"Um, you don't have to answer if you don't want to," he said, "but...who's the father? Of the twins, I mean..."

Wanda frowned and sighed heavily, pressing her good hand to her face. "I don't know," she answered softly, ashamed. "I mean, I have an idea... but I don't know for sure."

"I'm sorry," he said. "It's none of my business."

She frowned deeper. "Don't apologize for asking, please. It was a stupid mistake on my part."

"It was a cute mistake," he said as Thomas and Michael came running towards Wanda, brandishing little boquets of dandylions.
"Here Mommy!"

Wanda smiled softly and took the dandylions, carefully kissing each boy on the forehead.
"Thank you very much."

"What's for lunch?" asked Thomas. "We're hungry!" Mortimer stood up. "Come on then, we'll make some sandwiches." "I want peanut-butter-jelly!"

Wanda smiled slightly and stood as well, carefully pushing the boys forward. "Go wash up," she said gently.

The twins ran into the bathroom as Mortimer went to the kitchen and began making sandwiches. "You don't really see them as mistakes, do you?" he asked, making sure the kids couldn't hear.

She shook her head, pouring a glass of water to put the dandylion boquet in. "No, not really. The actions that lead to them were... but I wouldn't give them up for the world."
Frowning slightly, she put the boquet into the water and set it on the table, mostly to humor the boys. "I was a mistake to my mother, and I could never bring myself to make my children fell that way."

"Where do babies come from?" asked Michael, emerging from the bathroom. "Can I have peanut-butter-jelly now?" Mortimer helped them into their booster seats and gave them their sandwiches. He glanced at Wanda.

Wanda laughed softly, almost forced, and ruffled Michael's hair. "I'll tell you when you're older," she answered, not quite willing to explain sex to a two-year-old, or to lie and say something stupid like the stork.
Keeping her eye on the twins, she moved to pour them each a glass of milk.

"I told you she wouldn't tell us!" "Toad where do babies come from?" "You'll find out when you're older," he said, eating his own sandwich.

Wanda laughed softly, sitting at the table and setting their glasses of milk in front of them.
"Why do you want to know? You're still babies yourself."

"I'm not a baby!" "Yeah, I'm a big boy!" Mortimer chuckled. "Can't argue with that."

"Whose side are you on, anyway?" Wanda arched an eyebrow at Mortimer, stifling a laugh. "They're still my babies."

"Mortimer Toynbee, I do believe you're trying to encourge them," Wanda made a face and leaned across the table to wipe a mess of peanut butter and jelly from Thomas's face with a napkin.

"Morrimer says we're not babies," said Thomas, mispronouncing Mortimer's name. "Why are you named Morrimer and Toad?" asked Michael. "Toad is like a nickname," he said, "you know, a silly little nickname." "Can I have a nickname, too?" "Sure thing, Thomas Solo."

Wanda laughed softly and stood, picking up one twin at a time and putting them on the ground. It was a little awkward doing it one-armed, but neither of the children seemed to mind, groaning only when Wanda sent them to the bathroom to wash off the stains from the jelly and peanut butter.

Mortimer watched them go. "How am I doing?" he asked.

"Very good," Wanda smiled softly and stepped up to him. Placing her good hand on his cheek, she kissed him gently, quashing her fear that it would turn out badly again. "Thank you."

"Mommy, can we have cookies?" "Cookies! Cookies!" "I think it'a nap time," said Mortimer picking up the twins. "No it isn't!"

Wanda carefully took Michael from Mortimer, holding the child close to her. "You can have cookies after you take a nap," she said softly, kissing the top of his head.
"But, we're not sleepy," Michael blinked up at her, scrubbing an eye with a fist.
"You always say that," she informed him, looking over at Mortimer over the top of Michael's head. "Yet, you always go to sleep after lunch."

"But we're hungry now..." said Thomas, yawning. "I'm sure it can wait," said Mortimer, rising. "But now it's naptime." He started to head upstairs to the twins' room.
