Wanda sat on the front step, a cigarette that she'd stolen dangling from her fingers. Her hair fell over one shoulder as she watched the sun slowly set on the horizion, spilling a myriad of colors over the front lawn.
Her other arm was in a sling, bruised, cut, and half mangled from their last mission. She had called Magneto to ask him to keep the kids for another day or so until she learned to deal with everything one handed. There was no way she'd be able to run around taking care of two two-and-a-half-year-olds with one usuable arm.
It was moments like that when she regretted never asking for help from the Brotherhood. Of course, she was still wary about how they would deal with kids; after all, she didn't even handle it well, twenty times better than Magneto, but not well.
Sighing softly, she took a long drag on the cigarette and ran a hand through her hair, leaning back against the stair behind her. Maybe if she asked one of the guys really nicely, he'd agree to help her-or maybe they'd just laugh. She really could never tell in those situations.

Mortimer came outside. He couldn't find his cigarettes, but he saw Wanda sitting on the steps smoking. Maybe she'd give him a cigarette. He sat down beside her, suddenly wondering where her twins were. They were usually running around like maniacs. "Can I have one?" he asked, pointing to her cigarettes.

Wanda nodded and carefully handed Mortimer the pack with her injured arm. "Just don't tell Pietro I stole them, huh?" she said softly, taking another drag on the cigarette. "He's been bitchy lately."
Shrugging slightly, she stubbed out what was left of her cigarette and looked over at him. She was just watching for now, wondering if she should ask him about helping her watch the twins for a few weeks until her arm was usable again.

He pulled a book of matches out of his back pocket and lit the cigarette. "Thanks," he said, taking a drag. He glanced at her sideways. "Same brand I like...where'd you get them from?"

Wanda shrugged slightly, looking back at the lawn and running a hand through her hair. "I stole them from Pietro's desk. Knowing him, he probably stole them from you. Can't be bothered to buy his own cigarettes and all that."

"Figures," he said, puffing at the cigarette. "Where are the twins?"
He'd always been weirded out by the twins. Wanda's pregnancy had come totally out of the blue; she'd hidden it almost until she'd given birth. Wanda...pregnant...his Wanda, pregnant with another man's child...still, the kids were cute. Still, if Wanda ever wanted to be with him, he'd be able to love them.

"Magneto's watching them until either my arm's well enough to be out of the sling or I snap and take them from him," Wanda frowned slightly. She didn't really talk to the guys about the twins unless one of them brought it up, which never really seemed to happen. It occured to her that none of them really knew that she allowed Magneto to watch them when she couldn't. Which was rare, but it still happened more than she would like it to.
Taking the pack from him again, she lit another cigarette with her powers, looking over at him. "I'll probably snap long before my arm's better. Within a day or two, probably."

"Oh," he said. Wanda never talked about her kids. Mortimer wondered if she ever talked to their father, or even if she knew who he was. "How old are they, again?"

"Two-and-a-half," Wanda said softly. She swallowed slightly before taking a long drag on her cigarette. "They're getting too old to be left with Magneto, they'll start remembering the things that go on there, soon."

She smiled slightly at him, carefully resting a hand on his knee. "You mean, you could watch them. The others wouldn't do anything, and you know it."
She paused for a moment, her smile faltering. "I couldn't ask that of you, Mortimer. They're my responsibility; I knew what could've happened when I slept with those guys."

Those guys?! As in, more than one? His Wanda, sleeping around...She probably didn't even know who the father was. Mortimer shrugged and took a long drag of his cigarette. "I wouldn't mind," he said, "and I'm sure Fred would help me."

She bit her lip, watching the smoke roll off the tip of her own cigarette. "Are you sure about this? I mean, I'd just need a little help, not someone to watch over them twenty-four-seven or anything.... But still, it's a lot to ask of someone who isn't-" she cut herself off, frowning. Who isn't connected to them, really didn't finish the idea, considering the fact that the twins did live in the house and were part of all their lives, whether she didn't want to work out that way or not.

Wanda nodded and then carefully stood, offering Mortimer her hand to help him up. "I'm going to go call Magneto and tell him to drop the twins off as soon as possible," she smiled a little shyly at him. "And, um, thanks for helping me with this. It means a lot to me..."

She nodded slightly and stubbed out her cigarette as well. "He's better with them than he ever was with me and Pietro," she admitted softly, rubbing her hurt arm. "I think, maybe, he sees it as a second chance... I don't know, really."

Wanda nodded and carefully rested her uninjured hand against Mortimer's cheek, gingerly kissing his other cheek. "Thanks again," she whispered softly, not mentioning what had just said. "I don't think I'll ever be able to tell you how much this means to me, really."

Wanda nodded slightly to him, slipping back inside the house. After a few minutes of searching, she found the cordless phone between the couch cushions. There was a brief struggle as she tried to type the numbers in before she managed to get a hold of Magneto, talking into the phone softly in the hall so that no one overheard.

After a while, Wanda came back out, leaning against the railing next to Mortimer. "Magneto's going to drop them off tomorrow morning," she said softly. "He didn't want to wake them or something..."
